Students of Sustainability (S.O.S) is a club based on students having a proactive attitude towards the environment. S.O.S club was not here last year, but it’s back and growing in popularity. In an interview with Mrs. Porosky, I discovered that the club’s purpose is to, “Create awareness of environmental issues, such as protection, conservation, preservation, and restoration.” This means that S.O.S club is trying to spread knowledge regarding the very real environmental issues in not just our town, but our world.

S.O.S club recognizes the neglect for the environment that has become normal and tries to correct it. When asked what activities the club will be hosting, Mrs. Porosky said the S.O.S club wants to host, “campus cleanups, raffles, and a lot of things like recycling fundraisers to collect used things and reuse them instead of throwing them away.” These are events that many members of the student body have been trying to advocate for, but have not had the resources to attempt.
One of the goals of S.O.S club is to give students the ability to voice their opinions on the environment and follow through with their ideas on how to make our campus a better and more sustainable place. Mrs. Porosky is starting the club up again this year because she knows that there is a need for it, “Walking around campus there is a lot of trash. I want students to take pride in campus and our community and want to take care of it. An environmental science mindset helps prepare these students for the real world.”
Students can join S.O.S club by going to Mrs. Porosky’s room B-106 and talk to her, get the classroom code from posters around campus, or look for their table at Club Rush during lunch on Wednesday, August 28th. S.O.S club is an excellent club that gives students the opportunity to act on their passion for the environment.
