Girls Flag Football

When we think of sports, we often think of basketball, soccer, and especially football. Football has always been a “male-dominant sport,” but in the fall 2024 athletic season (tryouts started on August 12th), Lake Havasu High School will offer girls the chance to show their dominance.

LHHS is allowing female students to play flag football for their school. Any female student interested in flag football can join the program. But from the team’s perspective, “We’re looking for anybody who has the heart and will to win,” states head coach Charles Stickney. So, “by offering this program, we hope female students follow their passion and love for the sport.”

Flag football will appear in the Olympics for the first time in 2028. Students can also gain scholarships for flag football at certain colleges. It offers a pathway for women interested in getting involved while in high school to better their chances in a future career.

Not only does this program want to grow game-changers on the field, but also off the field. “I think it’s going to help impact them in the football field and the classroom,” said assistant coach Matt Sepulveda. So, both coaches are excited and have an optimistic vision of the future for the team.

LHHS is excited to offer this opportunity to any female students interested in showing their ability to play the game. We hope this program builds a strong team and an even stronger bond between teammates. If flag football is something you might be interested in, there’s no better opportunity to dive into it than these next few months. For more information, contact head coach Stickney or assistant coach Sepulveda.
